See Menorca’s fascinating archaeological and ethnological collections at the Can Saura Museum!

This is a municipal museum that depends on the Ciutadella Town Hall. It is a general museum that has a large collection of ethnological elements, as well as an important archaeological collection. Among the latter, the collections of materials recovered from the Mussol Cave and the Càrritx Cave stand out.

Thus, on the ground floor of the building, we find part of the museum’s archaeological collections on display as part of the exhibition: May the earth be light to you. A history of death in Menorca. With this title, the exhibition aims to introduce visitors to the world of death, beliefs and rituals practised in Menorca from the earliest settlers to the Andalusian period. Of special interest are the remains of the ancient Andalusian necropolis found under the building, which are integrated into the exhibition route.

The building, was built between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, is one of the architectural jewels of Menorca’s civil Baroque style.

It belonged to the family of Gaspar Saura, commissioner of the court of the Holy Office who was knighted in 1675. But the history hidden in Can Saura goes much further.

Within the walls of the manor house, the remains of one of the Muslim cemeteries of the old Madina Manurqa, the Maqbara, were discovered.
