Dive into Lithica, a fascinating archaeological park where history and nature merge. Found in Ciutadella’s heart, Lithica is a must for travellers interested on the sandstone quarries and prehistorical Menorca. Note, sandstone is the quintessential stone in the island.

Unconsciously, and with the work of their hands, the Menorcan stonemasons gave a fascinating shape to this space, from which the stone used to build the island’s houses was extracted.

It is worth noting the quarry was active from the 19th century until the end of the 20th century, and the stone was extracted by hand until 1960, when technology made the work of the stonemasons easier. After its closure in 1994, the space was partially filled in and used as a cultivation garden for years, until the non-profit foundation Lithica recovered it from abandonment and turned it into the recreational and cultural space it is today.

However, Lithica is more than a sculpted space: it is a living space. Its gardens are authentic strongholds for the conservation of Menorca’s native flora, in which aromatic plants and shrubs coexist with wild olive and lemon trees.

The quarries of S’Hostal are transformed every summer into a large open-air auditorium, where dance, theatre and music performances are staged in impressive shows with the marés walls as a backdrop.
