La Mola, a military fortress built in the 19th century and designed to protect the island!
Walk through its corridors, walls and cannons as you immerse yourself in the history of Menorca. Every corner of the fortress tells a story of defence, resistance and the passing of civilisations. Don’t miss the most iconic places in the fortress: the moat, the embrasure gallery, the Vickers Battery and the Queen’s powder magazine.
As on so many other occasions throughout history, the strategic location of the port of Maó was a key factor in the events that led to its construction. In the 19th century, Menorca had hardly any coastal defence enclosures. But the growing international tensions in the Mediterranean between France and England forced Spain to fortify the island once again. Located right at the entrance to the port, La Mola was built from 1850 onwards, incorporating the most advanced defence theories of the time.
Its excellent state of conservation makes a visit to La Mola a real journey into the island’s military past.
In addition to its unquestionable historical value, the Fortress of La Mola offers the opportunity to enjoy a unique natural environment. The area in which it is located has been declared a Special Area for the Protection of Birds. Moreover, its location on the easternmost point of Menorca offers spectacular views of the island’s coastline and the port of Maó. The natural and scenic values of the La Mola enclosure offer a complete and exciting view of Menorca’s recent history.
The fortress is located at the most easterly point of Spain!
