Revisit the English domination of Menorca in Fornells Tower, one of the largest towers in Menorca!

The main objectives of the Torre de Fornells, which is reminiscent of a small castle, were to protect the entrance to the port of Fornells and prevent the possible enemy landing to attack the nearby castle of Sant Antoni.

English coastal defence tower built between 1801 and 1802. It is one of the largest of all the English towers made in Menorca and its exterior appearance is different from that of the others built in the same period, because on the ground floor a reinforcement or slope was made and by the cylindrical parapet of the upper floor in moulded cantilever, which protrudes all of it from the exterior face of the tower and rests on corbels.

The Tower consists of 4 levels: the cistern, which was used to accumulate water, the lower floor, which was the food and weapons store, the first floor, where the troops lived, the terrace, where the artillery was located and from the place where the Menorcan contour was watched.

Although the interior of the tower is not particularly striking, there is an exhibition in which you can read everything about the tower and from its top you get excellent views of the Bay of Fornells.

On your way up the tower from the car park you will pass the Chapel of “Nuestra Señora de Lourdes”, a small shrine carved into the rock.

It was restored and opened to the public in 2000 with a simple and careful museum system. The visitor will be able to see this tower of defence against the dangers that arrived by the sea, constant in the history of Menorca.
