Menorcan honey is considered one of the best in the world for its delicious and fine taste thanks to the great variety of flowers from the Menorcan countryside. It is also a perfect food to accompany a slice of bread with Menorcan cheese or with Menorcan sobrasada, all local products of the island.
On this intriguing adventure you will learn first-hand about the honey-making process, and you will be able to observe and touch the beehives full of bees. You will also learn about the world of beekeeping from a professional beekeeper with more than 35 years of experience.
The Roman writer Pliny stated that beekeeping was the second best in the world, after beekeeping in Greece. As early as the 14th century, the King requested honey from the island and there is documentation of the jars that were sent to him.
Traditionally, Menorcan honey has been widely used as food, for medicinal purposes or mixed with wine. Some of the most popular recipes are sobrasada with honey, soft cheese with honey or mel i mantega (honey with cooked cow’s lard and pieces of stale bread), a dessert that was typical of the feast of All Saints. The contrast of sweet and savoury flavours that is so popular in the island’s gastronomy can even be seen in vegetable recipes such as aubergines with honey.
